The Valdocco Life-Lab works at the micro and macro levels to implement nature-based solutions for climate adaptation in the Valdocco neighbourhood of Torino. The Valdocco area was characterized by little green space, and public space consisting of 90% of vehicular roadways, widenings, and traffic island dividers disproportionate to the use of the area, and favouring high car speeds. Moreover, the area was characterized by lots of traffic and parasitic parking due to its proximity to the city centre and lack of parking charges. The project explored opportunities to retrofit forgotten spaces and repurposing areas devoted to roads and parking into public spaces. The NbS implemented respect the historically-defined streetscapes and adapt to the strict architectural regulations. Moreover, the project found new opportunities for increasing biodiversity whilst also improving human health and well-being. The delivery of this project acquired a significant role in the implementation of new environmental policies in the City. The main aim was to engage in a dissemination/public communication strategy, establishing a community collectively shared information, ideas, experience and expertise linked to the NbS implemented in the neighbourhood. For example, the schools of Valdocco were involved in the development of a public communication campaign promoting new awareness and familiarity with climate change mitigation and adaptation actions and sustainability related issues.
