Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB)

The urban hydrology research group is part of the HYDR department. Within the department there is a strong emphasis and experties in quantitative assessment of hydrological fluxes in urban environments. They aim at improving integrated rainwater management (IRWM), hence increasing resilience to climate change impacts such as floods and droughts. Hence, they rely on nature-based solutions and citizen science. A great part of the research projects of the urban hydrology research group is done in the Brussels Capital Region, an urban region in full transition, in which they have an extensive network among institutions, civil associations and private actors via past and ongoing projects such as Brusseau(Bis) and FloodCitiSense.

Meet the team

Elise Verstraeten
Researcher in the field of integrated water management
Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB)
Elise Verstraeten is a researcher in hydrology. She has worked on projects related to urban hydrology (BrusseauBis) and ground- and surface water quality dynamics (EGERIEC). She has a strong expertise in data management and analysis.
Boud Verbeiren
Professor in GIS and Urban Water Engineering
Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB)
Boud Verbeiren is a senior urban hydrologist, focusing on the Brussels Capital Region. His main expertise covers analysis of urban hydrological fluxes and spatio-temporal patterns, spatio-temporal monitoring & modelling, Geographical Information System/Science (GIS) and Citizen Science in an urban water context. Boud Verbeiren has a background in GIS and Remote Sensing. His core research interests and activities are the monitoring, mapping and modelling of spatial and temporal patterns of water-related phenomena in an urban context, with a specific focus on Brussels.
